Yes! We are back with another great session of “Rapid Fire Questions” by of course our loving good friend/League family member - Pablo G. Villazan. Today’s Q&A is with New York based artist Nicasio Fernandez. Nicasio’s amazing colorful paintings always hits us with something that we can all relate to. We at the League definitely approve and enjoy Nicasio’s great talent.

So, Ready! Set! Gooooooo!

Who is Nicasio Fernandez?
A Painter born and raised in Yonkers, NY.

Did you always want to be an artist?

It’s always been there as a passion but some of my family was against the idea and the poor school system in Yonkers didn’t provide a platform for it to be an achievable possibility.

Where does your inspiration come from?

Everyday life, personal moments, language, older cartoons and art history. My imagination runs wild with everything to help spark new ideas.

Which artists have the greatest influence on your work?

There's so many but I'll say Judith Linhares, Rene Magritte, Ingres, Peter Saul and The Chicago Imagists.

What is your process to create your work?

It’s a lot of drawing to find what feels right in the moment and patience in order to make the right moves and color choices.

Is there something you can’t live without in your studio?

Windows, I love looking out at the sky and trees while getting natural sunlight and fresh air, but walls are very important to make the paintings on.

What is the meaning behind your artwork?

I believe to give one definite meaning would destroy a viewers experience to the work overall. It’s better to think of them as layered riddles that take time to unravel.

Imagine that your paintings could talk, what would they say about you?

“Hurry up already” - Nicasio’s paintings.

What advice would you give to your younger self?

“Things get tricky, but stay focused”

Do you find the social channel’s influence Positive or Negative?

It’s a mix of both, it’s great for seeing what everyone is doing and connecting with people but a terrible distraction when it comes to focusing.

Describe in 3 words how social channels affect you as an artist.

Connection, support, obstacle.

What is your dream project?

Just to keep working bigger and explore more ideas within the work, and maybe in different mediums. Also something at the Whitney or New Museum would be amazing.
